Fire doors explained

A life-safety product designed to contain fire and smoke.

A fire door forms part of a building's passive fire-protection strategy. When correctly specified, manufactured, installed and maintained, it helps resist the passage of fire and smoke between compartments, protecting escape routes and providing additional time for evacuation and firefighting.

Performance is expressed as a period of fire resistance—commonly 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes—but the rating applies to the tested or assessed doorset configuration, not simply to the door leaf in isolation.

Standards and regulations

Requirements vary by project and jurisdiction. Hassock Wood reviews the information supplied for each doorset and manufactures within the applicable supporting evidence. The project designer, fire engineer, contractor, installer and responsible person retain their respective duties.

Approved Document B

Provides statutory guidance in England on meeting the fire-safety requirements of the Building Regulations. Fire doorsets are considered as complete assemblies, including the leaf, frame and ironmongery.

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

Places duties on the responsible person for fire safety in workplaces and relevant common parts of residential buildings in England and Wales.

Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022

Introduces additional fire-door information and checking duties for responsible persons in certain multi-occupied residential buildings in England.

Fire-resistance evidence

Configurations may be supported by test, assessment or field-of-application evidence to standards such as BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1, as required by the project.

No. Hardware type, material, size, position and preparation can affect performance and must be compatible with the applicable evidence.

Can glazed apertures be added to a fire door?

They may be possible where the glass, glazing system, bead, aperture dimensions and location fall within the supporting evidence.

Are FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120 available in every size?

No. Permitted dimensions and configurations vary between systems. Oversize leaves, pairs, overpanels and side panels require specific review.

Who is responsible for installation and ongoing checks?
